The Light Bulb went On

She just did it - walked from me to Avram (the whole way, unlike this video). The light bulb went on. Elisheva can only walk a few steps at a time, but I'm sure now that she has realized she can walk, it'll increase quickly. She was pleased as punch with her newfound ability. Half the time she couldn't walk at all she was laughing so hard.

Remember how we are so busy? Well, Avram just got called to be the Young Men's first counselor, and we have suddenly become busier. Then I look at people ten years older than us, and they are soccar moms and career dads as well as everything else. Remember when you were single, and spent weeks reading through series (if you were like me). Remember when you were a kid, and Summer was forever long, and you spent most of it outside playing? I never feel like I'm outside enough, now. But then when I go outside, I'm always at a loss as to what I should be doing (unless it's going on a walk), because what I really miss is going outside to play. To climb trees, to play pretend that I was going to live with my great aunt in England, who of course lived in the moors. Everyone worth knowing in Literature must have some relation to the Moors. And I'm worth knowing in Literature, after all. I need to find a secret playmate, and go play outside again. But I don't think I could forget I was 26 and a mom long enough to do so....

  2. When I moved into my current neighborhood 6 years ago, I felt like no one had interest in socializing and I was puzzled. Eventually I decided they were just too busy with their kids and church stuff to have free time for themselves. Now I'm nearly the same (although hope springs eternal for me to have a little bit of a social life of my own, even so.)

As far as having friends to go outside and play with -- what about your kids? Especially when they get a little older. I confess I don't play with my kids very often, but park days and family home evening do give me those opportunities to be be a kid again.

Good luck with the whirlwind of busy-ness. I *hate* being that busy but will sometimes schedule myself that much in order for me or my kids to have an opportunity (with 5 kids, it doesn't take much for us to be overscheduled) but I am always happy when things quiet back down to my idea of normal. I'm hoping for a fairly tranquil summer this year.

  3. Great timing! I had my laptop at Mom & Dad's house, and I was showing Mom (aka the great-grandmother) how we used the Internet to keep in touch, and pulled up your blog just in time to see this post. Great shot of Elisheva, and loved the commentary from Lydia.

  4. We like how you laugh at her as she falls down. I'll admit a little giggling myself.

  6. Oh, well, if you lived near moors, you would forever have to worry that your kids were wandering about, getting lost or lung-damaged by mist.
