I find myself wanting to become a doomsday prophet, telling earnest young students to stay out of academics. And then that breaks my heart, because I always wanted to get a Ph.d. The irrational part of me still does. But although there are so many intangible benefits to education, I also don't think it is worth five or seven years post undergraduate to go to school that is for education in a broad sense, but also very much for vocational training, and then not be able to get a job in the field you went to school for. I don't know if math has the problem with humanities, where there doesn't seem to be a good sideways career move option either (like with science, where it is common to not stay in academia).

I am interested to follow your life in Australia, and excited that you liked it so much when you were there this last year. I know a lot of math PhD students who haven't found any jobs, and have had to figure out how to reinvent themselves to find *some* job. Lots of friends have left academia. And sure, math *sounds* useful, but nobody really wants to hire someone who spent the last five years studying the p-adic properties of Heegaard floer homology, or whatever. It's really very depressing. More and more tenure track positions are being replaced by part time adjuncts, to save money. And state legislators are cutting funds from state schools, and there are fewer college age students to pay the tuition at the private schools, and we seem to be in a downward spiral in the US. I'm actually somewhat more hopeful about Australia, which is why I took a job there. They are better at paying living wages, to everyone, and there is state health insurance. And everything is more expensive, consequently, but they seem to do a much better job of taking care of their people. All people, not just rich people and lucky people. Fingers crossed that they also take care of academic people.
Artaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13841147515999189957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4679631342517586283.post-50064221245110024582015-03-05T00:06:56.140-05:002015-03-05T00:06:56.140-05:00Oh, Please please please PLEASE move into my ward ...Oh, Please please please PLEASE move into my ward boundaries, Thora! A study published just last year shows that children raised bilingual use up to 20% more of their brain architecture that monolingual children. I also realize that you don't speak French. THERE"S an opportunity for you to pick up some intellectual stimulation-- LEARN FRENCH too! (You'll find it a snap compared to Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic.) Je voudrais t'aider en ecrivant avec tois et avec tes enfantes. But writing and reading a language don't really help one learn it. You must actually speak it. Your job for Lydia.

Don't worry that ;Lydia seems gifted in some areas and behind in others. That is normal in gifted children. I'm homeschooli...Go for it! You will succeed.

I'm homeschooling my oldest right now and I have to say our curriculum doesn't look quite how I thought it would - I originally planned out that I would do X for english, Y for math, and Z for science, etc. Well, turns out he's been on an aerospace kick for a couple of weeks now, with no signs of letting up. So I decided to just go with it - he has made paper models (of his own design!) out of the space shuttle, and a few WWII bombers. As I type this he is working on a model of sputnik.

Where would we be if he were in a regular kindergarten classroom? I know there is a very heavy emphasis on early reading; he can read, but he is still quite the beginner. Excessive drill would wear him out, or turn him off from reading entirely. But he is legitimately doing grade 1 math; he'd be bored out of his skull in a classroom. And there is no way in a classroom of 20+ kids that his teacher would be able to come close to quenching his thirst for encyclopaedic knowledge about space.

When it came down to it and I had to legitimately make a choice, I agonized over it for quite a while. Was I doing the right thing? Was I taking away opportunities for fun and friends? But in the last month or so, I've stopped agonizing. I know this is the right direction for my family. The best lesson I've heard on grace recently came from a math professor, giving teaching advice:
http://mathyawp.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-lesson-of-grace-in-teaching.html
From the post: Your accomplishments are not what make you a worthy human being. And grace gives you dignity you don't have to earn. And much more.... Lots of thoughts in my head around this topic.
Artaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13841147515999189957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4679631342517586283.post-89150827922146434672014-11-07T09:52:14.349-05:002014-11-07T09:52:14.349-05:00I recently had a powerful personal revelation abou...I recently had a powerful personal revelation about grace. I am not sure how meaningful it will be to others, but it was pretty life-changing to me. For a long time I have been confused about grace. I knew it was enabling power, but I was confused about when it would be given. I pictured God zapping me with super strength at key moments. I wondered why I didn't feel it all the time, or ever. What seemed like key moments to me never felt miraculously easier. I figured if hard moments were hard, I must not have any grace with me. I was finally crying and praying about this one day, about why don't I have any grace, and how do I access it? Because I need help! And a voice in my head said, "You already have it. I made you that way." Which sounds really cheesy. But I thought about it, and now I think that grace (at least the aspect I am talking about) manifests itself most often in the getting through of hard times. It's still hard, and it feels awful, and slow. But you survive it because of grace, which is always there with you and makes it possible to keep slogging through.
There are other aspects of grace I have heard people talk about that seem more like the "zapping with super strength" variety. I have not experienced that yet. What I have experienced is the daily, constant, enabling power to get through my life. Thanks to my experience above, now I feel more at peace knowing it is always with me because it is "built in". I am so grateful I know that now.

Also, at a Q&A with Elder Anderson I went to once, a woman asked how she can find time for personal scripture study when she has lots of young children. I will never forget his answer. He said not to worry about reading your scriptures! When you are raising children, there will be times when it is very difficult to do that. Don't worry. You will get back into the scriptures someday.

I am currently in the same boat as you with reading scriptures -except I have never been good at it! Haha. Sometimes I feel bad, but then I remember what he said. Other times I remember other speakers who encourage me to try harder, and I do that for a while. Both are good things to do!Aleatha Shannonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00392415295910123120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4679631342517586283.post-58835261051443312592014-11-07T01:15:55.071-05:002014-11-07T01:15:55.071-05:00You made me think of this song.
